By Aaron Humes: The action continued Saturday in week three of the 2022 Sprite “Live Life” Youth Basketball Tournament at Buttonwood Bay Basketball Court.
Six games have been played. Ebony Lake defeated Team Don One 41-32; Heights Camp eliminated Freetown Hitters 23-18; Hattieville Underdogs emerged victorious over the Complex Titans by 51-46; Ladyville Big Dreams trailed Westmohland Elite 48-31; The Southside Warriors defeated Unruly Boyz 38-36; and Hard Rock took down Kraal Road 40-25.
But as police recalled in a Facebook post, scores aren’t the most important thing about this tournament: “We’ve seen rival teams, rival gang members hanging out together peacefully, reasoning with each other others, communicate with each other positively. We also saw, heart and soul competitiveness, sportsmanship, leadership and controlled disciplinary behaviors displayed on and off the Buttonwood Bay basketball court. In the final three weeks of this 2022 Sprite “Live Life” Youth Basketball Tournament, 15 teams from Belize District, over 140+ young men, ages 19 and up, decided to choose to shoot balls from basketball and compete and not shoot guns at each other, but more importantly they choose to “LIVE LIFE” positively. Respect to all teams and young men in this multi-sectoral violence response initiative.
Next week’s action moves to the village of Hattieville starting at 9.30am on Saturday May 28th.
The Department would like to thank Ministers Kareem Musa, Rodwell Ferguson and Dolores Balderamos-Garcia as well as sponsors and partners Leadership Intervention Unit and Sprite (Bowen and Bowen Limited), Department of Youth Services, Community Rehab Department, National Sports Council, Belize City Council and the Police Community Policing Unit and regular ranks for security at games.
