Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award 2022 for US Citizens ($10,000 scholarship)

Nominations are open for the 2022 Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award. As part of ESPYS 2022, ESPN’s Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award will once again celebrate the legendary sports icon’s commitment to leadership. and service, while honoring high school and college-aged students. who, like Billie Jean King, use the power of sport to improve their communities. Winners of the award – which was established in 2019 – will be recognized during the television special in mid-July.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in all federally funded schools or other education programs, including sports. The law has opened doors and removed barriers for girls and women. The groundbreaking Gender Equality Act has had a lasting impact in increasing the participation of girls and women in athletics. Since the passage of Title IX, women’s participation at the high school level has increased by 1,057% and by 614% at the college level.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX this year, ESPN will honor five young women who use the power of sports to better their communities by advancing gender equality through the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award.


The laureats

  • Be honored at ESPYS, join the incredible winners and recipients of other prestigious awards, including the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award.
  • Receive a one-time $10,000 college scholarship or award a grant to an eligible nonprofit aligned with his work.
  • Participate in experiential learning and development programs over the next year to benefit from mentorship and leadership coaching, while engaging with senior leaders in the sports industry and participating in sports workshops for development.
  • Meet and learn from tennis legend and social activist, Billie Jean King.
  • Join the Prize Alumni Program – a powerful network of young leaders using the power of sport to create social good in their communities.


  • Be a US citizen, US national or permanent resident.
  • Identify yourself as a girl or young woman.
  • Be under 25 years old.
  • If considered for a scholarship, the applicant must be a student who has demonstrated financial need as verified by their college or university, and must hold a minimum of 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • For scholarships, applicant must be a rising high school senior or freshman, sophomore, or junior attending an accredited 4-year college or university.
  • For a donation to an eligible nonprofit, the requestor may be a high school freshman, sophomore, junior or freshman, sophomore, college student, or current student.

Selection criteria

The successful candidates

  • Demonstrate how he/she uses the power of sport as a catalyst for change within his/their school or local community. This means that they intentionally use sport to change the way people think, how they feel and make them act.
  • Provide social impact showing how his/their community has been positively impacted. It’s not just about participating in an existing program owned by a non-profit organization, but how the candidate goes above and beyond with their contribution and unique work.
  • Be passionate about promoting gender equality and demonstrate what he/she has done to advance gender equality in his/their community.
  • Be passionate and committed to empowering the community in which he/she lives.
  • Embody confidence and enthusiasm as a leader and have a strong moral character.
  • Personify exemplary leadership qualities on and off the field.
