Casey’s partnered with Gatorade to provide $60,000 in grants to youth sports organizations in Knoxville, Tennessee; Kansas City, MO; and Oklahoma City.
Casey’s and Gatorade have agreed to provide $60,000 in funding through Gatorade’s Fuel Tomorrow initiative to three youth sports organizations in Knoxville, Tennessee; Kansas City, MO; and Oklahoma City. Gatorade’s Fuel Tomorrow initiative aims to help everyone have equal opportunity to play sports by breaking down barriers in the communities that need it most. The funding provides $20,000 to each of the organizations for equipment and resources to better serve youth in underserved communities.
Playing sports can improve young people’s chances of succeeding in school and college, as well as other long-term benefits like higher self-esteem. Yet there are significant barriers that prevent many children, especially those from low-income backgrounds, from participating in sports. Families have even fewer options for playing sports in the wake of COVID-19, with many reporting that their community sports provider has closed, merged, or returned with limited capacity.
Through the Fuel Tomorrow program, Casey’s and Gatorade support the following organizations whose work helps more young athletes realize their potential through the power of sport:
RIVERSPORT offers competitive rowing programs to Title 1 schools in Oklahoma City, with approximately 500 students participating throughout the year.
“Rowing offers tremendous opportunities for young people, including college scholarships,” said Mike Knopp, Executive Director of RIVERSPORT. “RIVERSPORT strives to ensure that all students, regardless of their resources, can experience the benefits of competitive rowing.”
Funding from Casey’s and Gatorade Fuel Tomorrow will kick off RIVERSPORT’s efforts to purchase a new fleet of rowboats in preparation for the spring rowing season. With boat repair costs now exceeding the value of the boats themselves, funds from Casey’s and Gatorade come at a time needed for RIVERSPORT to maintain its equipment.
- Downtown Youth Sports Program – Knoxville, Tenn.
The Center City Youth Sports Program (CCYSP) provides football, baseball and basketball programs to children in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, serving more than 300 students in six underserved communities throughout throughout the school year.
“This is the largest funding CCYSP has ever received,” said Churchie Riley, CCYSP Board Director. “This funding ensures that we don’t have to turn children away from our programs.
Funding from Casey’s and Gatorade Fuel Tomorrow will support CCYSP’s football equipment needs, including the purchase of new helmets and cleats for its growing student-athletes. Funding of $20,000 will also allow CCYSP to recruit additional coaches and volunteers to increase the number of teams and enable even more students to participate in its programs.
Mattie Rhodes Center (MRC) is a Kansas City, Missouri nonprofit organization dedicated to individual and family well-being through social and behavioral counseling, youth development, and the arts. Mattie Rhodes Center provides soccer programs to youth in the Kansas City, Missouri community as a tool to address children’s health issues and juvenile delinquency.
“Mattie Rhodes Center currently only has the resources to deliver youth football programming,” said Alisha Gambino, Director of Youth and Young Adult Services. “Funding from Gatorade and Casey’s will allow us to diversify the sports activities we offer our children to support their physical, cognitive and social development.
Funding from Casey’s and Gatorade Fuel Tomorrow provides the Mattie Rhodes Center with the opportunity to add “sports sampling” to its repertoire, giving the 85 children enrolled in the programming the opportunity to experience a variety of sports and physical injuries and exposing them to activities they haven’t had a chance to try.
“Gatorade and Casey’s share a passion for fueling the next generation and ensuring inclusiveness in sports,” said Melissa Miranda, Marketing Director, PepsiCo Beverages North America, Central Division. “Each of these organizations was selected for their dedication to creating more equity and opportunity in sport in the communities that need it most. We are delighted to provide them with funding so that they can continue to have a positive impact and help young people explore their limitless potential.
“Casey’s is proud to partner with Gatorade to ensure a level playing field for tomorrow’s athletes,” said Katie Petru, Director of Communications and Community at Casey’s. “From purchasing the necessary athletic equipment to hiring new coaches, our combined resources are enabling these young athletes to excel in their passions, and we couldn’t be happier to provide a brighter future for these stars. rising.”
