A court here on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Rashtriya youth wing leader Janata Dal (RJD) and student Jamia Millia Islamia Meeran Haider in an alleged criminal conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. Extra Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat passed the order in the case filed by Delhi Police Special Cell under various sections including the very strict Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Besides Haider, the police had also charged various other defendants, including former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, United Against Hate activist Khalid Saifi, former Congress adviser Ishrat Jahan, Pinjra Tod activists Gulfisha Fatima, Safoora Zargar, Natasha Narwal, and Devangana Kalita and former AAP adviser Tahir Hussain. Police say a large number of students, alumni and other members of a particular community participated in the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) rally.
They alleged that the defendant fomented a common conspiracy by calling for a march, leading a crowd and stirring up communal feelings. Attacks on police personnel, damage to police and public/private property, stone throwing and arson took place against the barricade/police group stationed outside the Jamia campus, they said.
Haider was arrested on April 1, 2020.
