Senatorial aspirant Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar wants Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to move out of the field of sports development to focus on other areas of leadership training, including being part of the solution to the country’s social problems.
In a statement, Eleazar said the SKs should take a more active role in other issues affecting young people, including juvenile delinquency, and initiate various community programs.
“Besides ball games and other sports tournaments, there are a lot of activities that SK could focus on. We need to empower young people more as they are the future leaders of the country,” Eleazar said.
He also encouraged Local Government Units (LGUs) to support SK youth development activities in their barangays.
Eleazar shared that he started community development programs for young people when he became chief of the Philippine National Police to deal with juvenile delinquency cases.
He said if he wins the Senate elections he will improve and strengthen the implementation of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act 2006, which aims to provide appropriate care, protection and treatment to minors in conflict with the law.
Meanwhile, Eleazar also expressed support for Senator Panfilo Lacson’s position that parents should be held accountable for criminal offenses committed by their children.
Lacson and Eleazar run under the Partido Reporma, the former being the party standard bearer. ###
