Minister of Education launches NWT Education Youth Forum

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has launched the Youth Forum on Education in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

RJ Simpson, Minister for Education, Culture and Employment, convened the forum to hear directly from students about education issues that matter to them. The group will meet virtually to brainstorm and come up with topics and issues for the 2022-23 school year.

Student insights and recommendations, particularly with respect to education delivery and modernization, can assist the Minister and Department in developing youth-focused policies and initiatives.

Students will be asked to keep a written journal of their time on the forum and to reflect on what they have learned and contributed. They can also share information with other students about the work of the forum in order to gather feedback from the whole class or school population.

The forum is made up of high school students from each education organization in the NWT, as well as a representative of the Superintendent, the Assistant Deputy Minister of Education and Culture, and may include guests from outside the NWT. coming.

The first meeting took place on November 17 and another meeting is planned in the new year.

“I am delighted to have the privilege of meeting young people from the Northwest Territories and hearing about the issues that concern them. The Youth Forum on Education will empower young people to get involved, have their voices heard and be agents of change in their schools and communities. I look forward to having our discussions and getting to know these students.

R.J. Simpson, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment
