Mount Pleasant Youth Council asks community to help raise funds for outdoor basketball courts | Opinion

The Mount Pleasant Youth Council dedicated its 2021-2022 session to raising the $150,000 needed to build additional basketball courts at the Carolina Park Recreation Complex.

As many residents have become accustomed to playing outdoors and are now enjoying it following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Youth Council has identified the need for additional outdoor public basketball courts.

Although there are currently a small number of outdoor courts, demand is so high that it is difficult for children to secure playing time on the courts.

The City of Mount Pleasant has two outdoor basketball courts included in the Carolina Park Recreation Complex Master Plan that currently lack the funds to build them. The fundraising goal of $150,000 would build the two courts and install the necessary lighting and fencing. The two additional courts would also be scratched for four pickleball courts.

Members of the Mount Pleasant Youth Council are asking for the public’s help in raising these funds. Please consider making your tax-exempt donation today. Donations can be submitted through the city’s GoFundMe page.

The Mount Pleasant Youth Council is made up of local high school students with a mission to “empower young people by providing them with the opportunity to serve, develop leadership skills, and become engaged and responsible citizens.”
