The Old Guard hosted a golf tournament and fundraising luncheon for the West Hartford YMCA Camp Scholarship Program.
The Old Guard Inc. of West Hartford held their Swing for the Kids Golf Tournament and Luncheon on September 21 at Stanley Golf Course and the Back Nine Tavern in New Britain. With the success of this event, children from families in financial need will be able to attend YMCA of West Hartford camps, as the net proceeds of $6,010 from the tournament went to the Y camp scholarship fund.
The Old Guard Inc. is a group of retired and semi-retired men dedicated to education, fellowship and community service. Weekly meetings feature guest speakers from government, education and business. Fellowship opportunities include excursions, bowling, golf and lunches.
Russell H. Jones, President of The Old Guard, highlights the organization’s many accomplishments: “The Old Guard (ctoldguard.org) has provided volunteers and funds to local charities that have supported children and families for over 50 years. The approximately 200 retired and semi-retired professional men on the current workforce ring the Salvation Army bell at Christmas, deliver meals on wheels year-round, provide helpline service at the UConn Health Center, tri food at CT Foodshare, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and support area food banks, among their many charitable and social activities. It gives us great pleasure to announce the outstanding results of our annual Swing-for-the-Kids Golf Tournament.
Due to the pandemic, the golf tournament had been postponed for two years. Thanks to the hard work of a committee of old guard members, this year’s tournament was very successful. Thirty-five golfers took advantage of the excellent conditions on Stanley’s blue course and were joined by thirteen others for a delicious lunch at the Back Nine Tavern which included a silent auction and raffle. Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, as well as the donors of the raffle and the silent auction, this tournament was the most successful ever organized by the Old Guard.
Tournament sponsors helped exceed the financial goal set for the tournament. Champion Sponsors – Duncaster Foundation and Seabury. Platinum Sponsor – Cummings & Lockwood LLC. Gold Sponsors – Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Foundation, Nassau Financial Group and Rob O’Meara Realtor. Silver Sponsors – Hammond Iles Wealth Advisors, Kaoud Rugs and Mike’s Barber Shop of West Hartford. Bronze Sponsors – Dental Associates, Hartford HealthCare and the Senior Job Bank of West Hartford. Laura Prisco, Executive Director of the YMCAs of West Hartford and Plainville, said, “The Old Guard of West Hartford has had an exceptional relationship with the YMCA of West Hartford since the organization’s inception, holding their meetings at the YMCA of West Hartford. . Since then, the Old Guard has been a strong supporter of our YMCA through their personal donations and fundraising from organizations like the ‘Swing for the Kids’ Golf Tournament to help provide the children of local families with the opportunity to participate in Day Camp, University Summer Programs and Youth Programs year-round. We can never thank them enough! I would also like to thank all their sponsors for their participation in this important undertaking.
With the success of the Swing for the Kids Golf Tournament, the Old Guard will host another tournament next year. You’ll want to be a part of it and support West Hartford YMCA youth camps and programs!
