Construction work on the Olympafrica Youth Center in Ruai, Nairobi County will begin in the coming weeks following the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, on the 6-acre plot.
The Nairobi County Government has donated the land to Olympics Kenya free of charge, which will be used to build sports and social facilities to benefit the youth and community in the surrounding area.
It will be built under the auspices of OlympAfrica, with the main objective being to provide sports that are easily accessible to young people as well as to advance social development through sport.
OlympAfrica will provide seed funding, Olympics Kenya and the Kenyan government and other stakeholders will fund day-to-day running costs, while the local community will be in charge of its management and support the implementation.
The center will run core programs replicated in other Olympafrica centers across the continent. But the focus could be on popular sporting disciplines such as football, rugby, handball and swimming.
The Center will be built at an estimated cost of $350 million.
About the OlympAfrica Centers:
OlympAfrica is an international organization that has existed for 25 years and has centers in 35 African countries.
The Olympafrica program was designed by the former President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Juan Antonio Samaranch, to promote the social values of the Olympic Movement in Africa.
It is managed by the International Olympafrica Foundation under the auspices of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).
The Foundation seeks to improve the living conditions of the most disadvantaged by financing activities organized around four main areas: sport (development of infrastructure, programs and organization of tournaments); culture (youth centres, libraries); education (training workshops, awarding of scholarships); and socio-economic initiatives (health posts, support for local communities in the implementation of their craft, market gardening and other projects).
It is based in Dakar, Senegal and was launched in 1989.
